GOIÁS

Back to Brazil

Colonization of Goiás began in the 16th century. In the Portuguese colony of Brazil Goiás was a part of the captaincy of São Paulo. A captaincy General of Goiás was created in 1744.

In 1889 with the proclamation of the Republic Goiás became a state. In 1960 the Federal district of Brasilia was separated from the state and in 1988 its northern part became the state of Tocantins.

In the time of the Empire the arms used by the provinces were the Imperial Arms. At the proclamation of the Republic the states  were granted the right to adopt their own achievements.

The achievement of the State of Goias is:

Arms: A fess per pale, the dexter of 12 sections and the sinister a bar Sable, Or. The chief of a landscape with mountains in the distance and two grazing cattle on the foreground all proper. The base parted by a pale Argent, the dexter Azure, a comet Argent and the sinister Or, a diamond Gules.

Crest: Rising from a tube a bunch of rice, sugar-cane, tobacco and coffee.

Garland: Branches of tobacco and sugar-cane and a dish containing the flames of a fire.

  • The shield has the form of a heart because the state is in the heart of Brazil.
  • The the dexter part of the fess represents the twelve rivers of the state: São Marcos, Veríssimo, Corumbá, Meia Ponte, dos Bois, Claro, Verdinho, Corrente, Aporé, Sucuri, Verde e Pardo and the sinister part the three main lanscapes.
  • The cattle in the landscape represents  the most important product of the state
  • The first quarter in base shows the Biella comet and symbolizes the River Araguia where it forms the Island of Bananal.
  • The second quarter in base symbolizes the mineral wealth of Goiás.
  • The dish enflamed refers to Bartolomeu Bueno, who acording to legend, set fire to spirits when fighting a holy war in Goiás.

The Constitution of the Federation of 1934 abolished the symbols of the states and their achievements were replaced by the national emblem.

The Federal Constitution of 1946 restored the autonomy and also the achievements of the states.
